Honor Society® Expert FAQ
How should college students network with alumni?
College students can network with alumni by requesting a short conversation about a specific role, field, or career transition. Explain your connection, what you are exploring, and why that person’s experience is relevant.
Ask a focused question that respects the person’s time
Use your college’s approved alumni directory, career events, or professional platforms. A concise message might say: “I’m a second-year student exploring operations roles and noticed your work in logistics. Would you be open to a brief conversation about skills you use most?” Personalize the request instead of sending a generic mass message.
Prepare questions, listen carefully, and follow up with thanks. Do not make a job referral the assumed purpose of the first conversation. Honor Society connections can offer another starting point when there is a genuine shared interest, but an affiliation does not obligate someone to respond or endorse you.
Your next steps
- Choose alumni whose work connects to a specific question.
- Send a brief, personalized request with a modest time commitment.
- Thank them and apply one useful insight from the conversation.
