The Soros Justice Media Fellowships support writers, print and broadcast journalists, bloggers, filmmakers, and other individuals with distinct voices proposing to complete media projects for local, regional and national markets that engage the public and provoke policy responses to one or more of the Open Society Institutes U.S. criminal justice priorities. The fellowship program intends to support individuals interested in pursuing important but marginalized, controversial, or unpopular issues in a comprehensive manner. Media fellowships are one year in duration, and fellows are expected to make their projects the primary focus of their work during the term of the fellowship. Projects can begin in either April or September. Photography projects (production or distribution) are not eligible for funding. Eligible candidates must be professional journalists working in print, photography, radio, and television with at least three years of experience. The Institute is designed to attract talented students to print journalism through opportunities in sports reporting and editing, and enhance racial and gender Multicultural Students in sports departments of newspapers nationwide. The Institute runs from June through August and will consist of classroom sessions to be held at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla., from May through June, followed by eight-week paid internships at newspapers (to be determined individually), as well as a $500 scholarship upon successful completion of the program for students returning to college. All students must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 at an accredited four-year college or university.
