Marielly Santos

I am the type of person that enjoys helping others. Knowing that I have the ability to help those in need, makes me want to help others as much as I can. I have noticed that helping others are one of my many goals, its a goal that is important to me. I graduated from Bogota Jr./Sr. High School in 2012 and now attending Bergen Community College. During my fours years of high school, I was captain of the school's Color Guard team and volunteered at Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, NJ. While being captain I learned more about being a leader and learning how to teach others a new hobby. My major at this point in time is Liberal Arts General, yet I am going to change my major to nursing after finishing my associates at Bergen Community College. I am a former Senator of Student Government Association at my college. Also I am currently forming a Bystander Intervention Group at my college (Step Up). This group will be trained in assisting people (and themselves) around in case of an emergency. Most of us see someone and trouble, we tend to walk away so we do not get hurt. There are ways in helping others without hurting ourselves but most important the victim. In forming this group, I feel as though I will make a change in some peoples lives but most important reach for my goal in helping others.
My parents are from Dominican Republic, so I had the great opportunity to learn both American and Dominican cultures. I live close to the New York City (NYC), so I consider this an urban area. I love the being outside as much as I love being indoors. By living so close to NYC, this has given me the advantage to learn about so many other cultures besides my own such as visit different museums, taste different foods and hear different types of music. Having this opportunity makes me a strong believer of teaching and showing others about diverse cultures or lifestyles.
