About
Mensah Isaac Kweku Junior is an emerging plant scientist, climate advocate, and youth leader with a strong commitment to advancing sustainable agriculture and food security, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Born and raised in a farming community in Ghana’s Central Region, his early experiences with erratic rainfall, declining soil fertility, and crop failure shaped his passion for developing climate-resilient agricultural systems that directly serve vulnerable communities.
He holds a BSc in Agricultural Science from the University of Ghana and is currently an MSc Biotechnology student at the University of Glasgow, supported as a 2025/2026 Chevening Scholar. His academic and research journey bridges field-based crop improvement and laboratory-based molecular biology. He has worked extensively on maize, cowpea, and soybean breeding at the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI), contributing to drought tolerance screening, pest resistance evaluation, combining ability and heterosis analysis, and hybrid seed production. His experience also includes research on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and plant–microbe interactions relevant to stress resilience.
In parallel, Mensah has undertaken diverse laboratory projects spanning genetics, microbiology, and molecular biology, including genetic mapping in Drosophila melanogaster, gene expression analysis in cancer cell lines, recombinant protein expression and purification, and the isolation and characterisation of antibiotic-producing Streptomyces species. These experiences have equipped him with a strong interdisciplinary skill set and a systems-level understanding of biological resilience.
Beyond research, Mensah is deeply engaged in leadership, advocacy, and community development. He has served as National Organizer for Clean Ocean Project Ghana, General Organizer for the International Association of Students in Agricultural and Related Sciences (IAAS-UG), and Project Coordinator for the Community and Family Aid Foundation (CAFAF), where he has led youth empowerment, sustainability education, and outreach initiatives. He is passionate about inclusive leadership, science communication, and translating research into real-world impact.
His long-term ambition is to become a plant breeder and crop scientist driving climate-resilient food systems in Africa, while contributing to global research, policy dialogue, and capacity building. Mensah brings a rare combination of scientific rigor, lived experience, and social commitment, with a clear focus on using science as a tool for equity, resilience, and sustainable development.
