Fatuma Mahdi

I was born in Kenya, but my parents were born in Somalia. Before I was born, there was war that broke out in Somalia. My parents had 4 kids at the time, but due to hunger one of them died. The war made life hard for my parents. For example it was hard for them to find food or water for my siblings, they experienced a lot of traumatizing experiences like witnessing others being raped or killed, they also had to flee Somalia to Kenya by foot to keep themselves and my siblings safe. The worst part was that my parents had to walk for days or more just to get to Kenya. It was not an easy walk since they still had to worry about food and water, getting raped or killed, or losing another child. Lucky they made it safe and sound to a refugee camp in Kenya and thats where they had me. From there we ended up in America with the help of Catholic Charities. When I became old enough to understand the struggles that my parents had to go through just to come to America, I ended up with a passion where I wanted to help others. So thats how I live my life today. I became a CNA just to know how it feels to help others, and I love it. Thats why I want to aim higher and get a bachelors in nursing so I can help more people that are in need.
