About

As a freshman at Modesto Junior College, I am working towards obtaining my Associate’s in animal sciences while exploring my academic interests before transferring to UC Davis to major within the field of biology or animal sciences. My goal is to become a veterinarian. Despite having to go to school for about 8 years to achieve this goal, I know I will be able to succeed as I have gained the skills necessary to accomplish this through taking rigorous courses in high school and my involvement in the animal science program at my high school. Regardless of any circumstance I have found myself in, I persevere without giving up. Knowing my duty to give back to my community, I have always wanted to have a career in which I serve others and my community, therefore I have chosen to become a veterinarian as they have the responsibility of ensuring the health and wellbeing of animals along with the health of our community.

Goals and interests

Career goal

My goal is to become a veterinarian, although I am still discovering my passions to help me decide on what to specialize in. My second option would be to do research within the field of biology.

Graduate school interests

After receiving my bachelor's degree, I wish to go to UC Davis veterinary school to receive my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

Outside the classroom

During my free time I enjoy drawing, spending time with friends and my dog, volunteering, being outdoors (birdwatching, going to the lake, hiking, fishing) and traveling.

Volunteering

  • As a member of the Enochs Environmental club, I attended several river cleanups with other club members who joined the 9 to 99 organization to cleanup our local Tuolumne river. I helped pick up trash and other debris along the riverbed so that the debris would not contaminate our water when the river swells up after a storm.

  • I volunteered wrapping gifts with the organization Soroptimist International by wrapping gifts the week before Christmas. Generous people bought gifts for these children and I along with other volunteers made sure the gifts were safe to give and wrapped them before delivering them. These gifts were for low income and homeless children in our area.

  • I volunteered for the Modesto mayoral runoff race from late December until election day which was held during early February. Because of covid, I dropped off flyers on doorsteps and participated in phone banks held online through zoom. Volunteers like me called voters to inform them on the runoff election along with where or how to vote.

  • After being an intern in 2018, I became a campaign organizer, a similar internship except with more responsibility. I helped recruit volunteers for the campaign and got to meet them individually. Along with the 20 or so other campaign organizers, we would have phonebanking or textbanking events where we would call/text voters with information about the candidates on the ballot. Because of covid, this was done all through Zoom. Since I also speak Spanish, I was assigned to work on the Spanish speakers outreach, especially the communities of West and South Modesto. As the co-leader of this outreach group, I lead the weekly meetings and taught volunteers how to phone bank.

  • During the holidays I went to the Bethel Retirement Community in Modesto with some friends to help decorate the buildings for the upcoming events that would take place. Not only did I get to decorate the Christmas trees in the buildings, I got the opportunity to spend time with the elderly who were thrilled to converse with teens like me.

  • Every Monday after school students like me who were part of the club would participate in our weekly cleanups of our campus. We collected recyclable cans and used that money to fundraise for a local park being built for children with special needs.

    Aug 2018 – May 2022

  • For the 2018 Midterms I was an intern for then congressional candidate Josh Harder. As a freshman in high school, I joined this campaign to learn more about how congressional campaigns and elections work. I got to knock on doors and call voters to let them know about the upcoming election, along with registering new voters, especially those who just turned 18. Since I am fluent in Spanish, most of those who I contacted were Spanish speakers.

  • Starting in 2015, I organized what I called a "Pet Item Donation Drive" or PIDD where I collected pet supplies for the local animal shelter such as dog/cat food, collars, leashes, beds, blankets, dog/cat toys, and treats. I conducted this donation drive by myself, independent from a school club or another entity. I organized this donation drive for the first time during my summer break in 2015, the summer before 6th grade. To collect donations, I let family members, friends and neighbors know. During Nov. 2015 I dropped off the donations, all which totaled to around $800 worth of donations. Annually I still bring donations to the animal shelter although smaller in amount as the original donation drive.

Organized by myself, donations benefited ASTRO Foundation Inc. and Oakdale CA Animal Shelter
