The Job From Hell

It is said that managers should not just be managers. Managers should be leaders. Many American companies pride themselves on creating workplace workshops designed to inform employees about the importance of workplace tasks and workplace diversity. One particular place I worked for seemed to be seriously lacking in the training workshops. It was either that or the managers did not fear losing their jobs enough. This company is well known for always needing employees because people quit frequently.

As soon as I graduated from college I moved back home. My job as a Substitute Teacher did not begin until three months after I graduated. In the meantime I had to take employment in the only job that would hire me outside of the education field-as an assistant at a retail store.

One of the managers copped an attitude with me on day one because he thought I did not hear something he said. This managers and other managers in that same department continued the nonsensical attacks on me throughout my entire tenure at the establishment. I later found out that one of the managers was going through some personal issues and decided to take out his/her frustrations on multiple employees.

The entire time I worked at this establishment there were blatant outward displays of unprofessionalism. The managers screaming to the top of their lungs. A manager commenting about the physical strength of an employee was heard by over ten employees through storewide mobile listening devices. One manager yelled at me at the top of his/her lungs for a minor infraction. He/She then saw how I was staring at him/her as a person who was stunned. The person knew they were wrong about yelling at the top of their lungs for a small, first-time infraction. This person then continued to say their corrections to me in a normal voice-as the person was supposed to for the first time.

My mother warned me that I would not fit into the work environment at this corporation. This corporation is known for hiring specifically people without a college degree who are very streetwise. Although I knew these facts I applied for the position. There was not much work open in the small town I was searching for work in. I made a conscience decision to get a paycheck so that I can pay for the bills that God asked me to pay. I was not going to depend on my family. I was going to pay the bill myself. I had and still have goals. It’s good to pray about decisions before making them.

I did not plan on working for this business for more than a few months. I had and still have an eventual goal of becoming an Urban Planner. According to my religion choosing to be unemployed is not an option. I had to finish one of my degrees so that I can devote my time to such a prestigious position. God had me in the preparation process. Paying off my school debt is one of the components of that process.

Do not quit your job immediately when you find yourself in a bad or harassing situation. Pray about your decision. You may have a family depending on you. You may need to rely on yourself alone for your financial relief. When your life belongs to a higher power make sure that your life decisions line up with the religious belief(s). Let the power take some of the burden off of you having to know everything and save yourself from everything. God is that power for me. He has saved me from alot of trouble when I tried my very best to avoid disaster and still came up short. I was almost homeless. That did not happen. There were times while I was an undergraduate student that I ran out of time to read the assigned chapter(s) for a class that I had the next day. Sometimes those classes were canceled! Try your best and let someone more powerful do the rest!!
