For many, myself included, living with someone you have never met may seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be. As you enter this new chapter of your life called college, you will need to learn many things to live in harmony, especially with your roommate. Life is all about trial and error, and now that I have gone through that, let me give you some tips on how to approach, live, and create a bond with your roommate.
1. Contact them before moving in (IF POSSIBLE)
If your school gives you your roommate's email, contact them! Just send a friendly greeting and introduce yourself. It makes you look proactive and amicable.
2. People are more understanding than you think.
If you have become accustomed to living alone, then living with someone will become a major change in your life. Not only will you have to accommodate some things for them, but you will also want to ask them to do or not do things while living together. Sometimes we abstain from asking because we might look presumptuous, but don't worry about that. Be kind and friendly while asking them. Believe me, they will start listening not because you are their boss, but because you came forward and asked nicely. People are understanding.
3. Do things with them!
You will spend a considerable amount of your time with them. At night, morning, etc. Try to get to know them. Include them every once in a while in your routine, and believe me, that will make a big difference.
4. Be respectful.
Remember that everyone is different. The way they were raised may not be the same way you were. Be understanding and always on the lookout.
College is a beautiful part of life; don't let it go to waste!
