My Core Values Scholarship

Oct 26,2016

My name is Ja’el, by way of introduction.  I entered nursing school at age 38.  Prior to that, I was a secretary, a waitress, and a wife.  When my husband died, I needed to find a career.  I chose nursing because I love people and health.  I am the first college graduate in my family.  It’s been a long road with lots of bumps along the way.

I’ve worked in many hospital departments, including oncology, medical-surgery, telemetry, emergency, electrophysiology, catheterization lab, operating room, cardiac rehab, clinical research trials, home health, and biologic infusions.  My favorite position is my current role as adjunct professor at a local state college.  Watching my students learn new concepts and develop critical thinking as they help patients is a thing of beauty.

It took me a few years working in the acute care setting to acknowledge the importance of pursing higher education with the goal of better educating my patients.  I loved my local state college and completed my Bachelors’ degree there with the assistance of incredible professors.  In fact, it was one of my professors that encouraged me to apply to a teaching role and I’ve never looked back.  Now I am pursuing my Masters’ degree online as Nurse Educator at the University of Central Florida.

Working three per diem jobs during my studies does not allow me much free time for extracurricular activities.  But I make sure to carve out time for friends and relaxation.  I am one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and enjoy studying the Bible.  I also love boating in the Florida Keys …  my idea of paradise! This scholarship is so amazing!  Now I will be able to stress less about finances and focus more on my students and my studies.  What a wonderful, surprise gift!  Thank you again, Honor Society!
