My Love Towards Singing

Jul 03,2020

My name is Alondra Ochoa, and I'm 22 years old living in Modesto, California. I was born with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder); at a young age, I took speech therapy due to having difficulty communicating with my teachers during class. During 7th grade was when I stopped going to speech therapy since I'm able to communicate better, as well as earning better grades such as A's and B's. Being born with a disability, I hardly talk about it, but that doesn't prevent me from pursuing my dreams in singing. My singing journey began when I was in the high school choirs during my sophomore year, and I sang as both soprano and alto. I served the class as both treasure during my junior year, and vice president during my senior year. Not only that, I would also take attendance to see who's there, who's not, and who shows up late. I graduated from Modesto High School in 2017 and went straight to Modesto Junior College in the fall to study music. I joined the MJC choirs during my second semester and sang as a first soprano. Since then, I continued to join choir throughout my second and third year at MJC and sang as both second soprano and alto. I also took applied voice, which is taking voice lessons once a week in order to prepare me for a voice recital. In applied, I would sing two English art songs, two Italian songs, one German song, and a musical theater song. My top four favorite songs from each category are "Love's Philosophy" by Roger Quilter, "Alma Del Core" by Antonio Caldara, "Lachen Und Weinen" by Franz Schubert, and "Once Upon a Dream" by Jekyll and Hyde. These four songs were the ones that I sang for my auditions at University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, California State University East Bay in Hayward, and California State University Los Angeles. I've been accepted to four schools such as California State University Stanislaus in Turlock, University of the Pacific, California State University East Bay, and California State University Los Angeles. Out of the four schools, I've chosen to go to Cal State LA to continue on with my music studies as a vocal performance major. I recently graduated from Modesto Junior College with my Associate's of Arts Degree, and I'll be transferring in the fall despite that my new school will be closed for the fall semester due to Covid-19. My goal is to graduate with my Bachelors Degree in two or three years and begin my career as a voice coach. I want to give basic private voice lessons and techniques to young kids at a high school level, as well as getting them ready for college, and hopefully they can continue on with their voice studies. My voice teacher has helped me a lot in preparing myself for what the future holds for me, and I want to make her proud; therefore, I want to be just like her, giving voice lessons to students but at a high school level. My love towards singing has always and will always be there, and I am known to be the first generation college singing student studying music performance.
