An Open Letter to Introverts

Mar 18,2016

I am the first to admit it: I am an introvert.  I hate going to parties or any social gathering, I hate talking on the phone.  When I do have to talk to someone on the phone, if it’s an important call, I try to either practice what I’m going to say or at least plan it out.  I hate to tell people that I would rather be by myself reading a book or watching YouTube than going out and partying because I don’t want them to think I’m a weird loner.  I also hate people assuming that I am stuk up or I don’t know how to talk because I’m quiet.  I thought that for today’s post, I will do another open letter, but to introverts to let them know that they are not alone, and to those who don’t really know what introverts are all about.

Dear Introvert,

First of all, I understand you.  I know that you get nervous at the thought of speaking someone one on one.  I know your hands start to sweat, you can’t look them in the eye, and you may get tongue tied.  You slowly take a glance at them to see if they are silently judging you for how you talk, or your lack of talking.  I know that you would rather read a book in your room alone because at least the book characters won’t judge you.  I know that you get super annoyed whenever someone talks to you like you don’t understand what they’re saying just because you don’t talk.  I know that you are a smart person that does not deserve to be talked down to.

I also know that you are a beautiful person on the inside.  I know that you have a creative imagination that want to be let out in the world, but you are worried about judgment.  I know that you have so many wonderful thoughts and ideas swimming around in your mind, but you are afraid to voice them.  I also know that you would rather listen to conversations than carry them out.

I also know how hard making friends are.  I know how hard it is to trust someone with your deepest secrets and to trust them not to stab you in the back.  I know the hurt you experience when that knife finally does pierce through your skin, and your trust walls begin to crumble and become non-existent.  I know that when someone hurts you, they cut deep.  It becomes hard for you to trust someone ever again, because why would someone want to be your friend?

I want you to know that I completely understand you because I am one of you.  I want you to know that we introverts are beautiful creatures who are completely misunderstood.  I will always be here supporting you.

                                                                                        Sincerely,

                                                                                        A fellow introvert

I hope that this post has given you a better idea of what introverts are really like.  Sorry if this seemed really melodramatic, but it is the truth.  If you are an introvert at heart, let me know if this struck a nerve with you, or if you aren’t an introvert, let me know if there are still things you don’t understand about us.  Thanks as always for reading!
