Jan 14,2016

In our modern day society finding a job in the media and entertainment industry can be very stressful.

Thanks to Professor Walker who made it possible in collaboration with her online journalism class brought two amazing alumni who have been excelling in their perspective field of work.

The panel started with alumni introducing themselves.

Kenneth Ware Jr. was the first to introduce himself to the panel.

Whiles he talked about his new gig with Warner Brothers. Which he starts on Monday in Burbank California.

He also talked about his published works with the New York Times, Houston Chronicle and other great internship opportunities he had in the past.

Next to introduce himself was Ruben Dominguez who’s is currently a reporter at Fox 26 on of Houston’s local channel.

Ruben also talked about his job description and what he does most at Fox 26.

“I do all of everything mostly entertainment and lifestyle,” said Ruben.

He continued to talk about how business in journalism has been changing.

And it’s very important to keep up with new and innovative ways to stay on top of what you do.

Jason Reed a current sophomore asked Ware Jr. what the journey has been so far in his career.

Ware Jr. explained that when he first got his intern at KHOU, he had to work on different things at the same time.

“Such as associated press, Photoshop, Twitter, Facebook and others. It was a multitasking situation for me,” said Ware Jr.

He also explained the importance of knowing how to multitask.

Being in a news room can be very stressful and overwhelming, covering different stories and making sure all your stories are accurate.

“Use different social media tools as well,” said Ware Jr.

Ruben also went on ahead to tell students what he also does at Fox 26 apart from reporting.

‘I also work halfway with the Human Resource office when it comes with internships,” said Dominguez.

His reason for working with a lot of interns is because he loves to work with them.

“I love working with interns a lot because most of them are amazing,” said Dominguez.

Any individual willing to work in the journalism market has to have a great attitude towards work.

The two alumni also went on to discuss the importance of doing your job and being the best you can.

Being the best you can means you have to focus on yourself and nobody else.

“I do not look at it as a competition I stay focused on myself. Make yourself work harder and my only competition is myself,” said Ware Jr.

Ruben also gave his advice about working harder.

“Setting yourself apart. Working different sectors and stay true to yourself,” said Dominguez.

Kenneth also gave a brief history about some of his work ethics since he started college.

And also not forgetting the hands on training you learn from school, because that would be of great help to you.

“I took Professor Walkers class 3 years ago and I still tweet using the hashtag #TwitterNewsChat,” said Ware Jr.

After an interesting hour and a half the discussion came to an end, but the two also left some words of encouragement for current journalism students.

“I would strongly suggest you consider different degrees or jobs if you do not have any passion for this,” said Dominguez.
