Honor Society® Expert FAQ

Can professors detect AI-written assignments?

Professors may assess writing through its content, course context, drafts, discussion, or detection software. AI detectors can make mistakes, so a score alone cannot reliably establish who wrote a particular assignment.

Detection scores do not establish authorship by themselves

The relevant standard is compliance with the course policy, not whether assistance is detectable. Do not use rewriting services to conceal prohibited generation or invent a writing history. Keep genuine notes, source records, and drafts as part of your ordinary process.

If a concern is raised about your work, read the notice, respond factually, and follow the institution’s review procedure. Explain your actual process and provide authentic records when requested. Avoid treating either a high detector score as automatic proof of misconduct or a low score as permission to ignore the rules.

Your next steps

  • Follow the assignment’s AI and authorship rules.
  • Keep genuine drafts and research records.
  • Respond to concerns through the stated institutional process.
