Honor Society® Expert FAQ

How do colleges set AI usage policies?

Colleges set AI policies through institutional rules, departmental expectations, and instructor or assignment guidance. Students need to identify the rules that apply to the particular work, not assume one statement covers every course.

Read institutional guidance and assignment-specific instructions

A policy may distinguish permitted assistance, prohibited generation, required disclosure, approved services, and information that cannot be uploaded. It may also differ between practice work and exams. Save the current syllabus and any written clarification, especially when instructions change during a term.

Ask a concrete question when needed: “May I use an assistant to identify grammar issues after I write the draft, and what disclosure is required?” If instructions appear to conflict, ask the instructor to resolve the conflict before proceeding. A classmate’s practice or a product’s marketing does not establish permission.

Your next steps

  • Collect the institution, course, and assignment instructions.
  • Identify the proposed use and ask about uncertainty.
  • Follow the confirmed rule and required documentation.
