Honor Society® Expert FAQ
Should students use AI for homework?
Students should use AI for homework only when the instructor permits it and the use supports the intended learning. Getting a correct-looking answer is not enough if the assignment is meant to assess your independent reasoning.
Use assistance only when it preserves the assignment’s purpose
First attempt the work yourself. If allowed, request a hint, a question about your approach, or an explanation of a concept rather than a completed response. Then solve a similar problem without the assistant. If you cannot explain the submitted work, the process has not shown that you learned it.
Some homework prohibits AI entirely; other assignments explicitly require it with documentation. Follow the actual instructions instead of assuming all take-home work permits outside help. When unsure, ask the instructor using a concrete description of the assistance you want.
Your next steps
- Check the assignment’s rules and learning objective.
- Attempt the work before requesting permitted help.
- Verify the result and demonstrate independent understanding.
