Honor Society® Expert FAQ

Can you change colleges after accepting admission?

You may be able to change colleges after accepting an offer, but you must follow the institutions’ policies and any binding agreement. Deposits, housing commitments, aid, and enrollment timing can be affected.

Resolve commitments and costs before switching

First obtain a confirmed offer and workable financial plan from the new college. If your current commitment is binding, contact the institution about its release process before proceeding. Do not assume that accepting another offer automatically cancels the first.

Notify the original college promptly once the change is permitted and decided. Ask about deposit refunds, housing cancellation, records, and aid adjustments. If you have already enrolled or attended classes, the new institution may treat the move as a transfer rather than a change between first-year offers.

Your next steps

  • Check binding commitments and cancellation terms.
  • Confirm the new school’s admission, aid, and housing details.
  • Withdraw appropriately and coordinate records with both schools.
