Honor Society® Expert FAQ

Can you lose a scholarship if your GPA drops?

A GPA drop can affect a scholarship if the award requires a minimum GPA to continue. Whether funding stops immediately, after a review, or after another process depends on the written terms. Do not assume every scholarship uses the same rule.

Find the policy before making a financial assumption

Check whether the requirement uses term or cumulative GPA and when it is reviewed. A scholarship may have warning, probation, appeal, or reinstatement provisions, but these are not universal. The school’s financial aid satisfactory-progress rules and a particular scholarship’s conditions can also be separate.

Contact the provider or financial aid office promptly if you expect to fall below the requirement. Explain the situation accurately and ask what documentation or action is allowed. Do not assume that retaking a course will automatically restore funding.

Put the answer into practice

  • Read the actual GPA and review rules.
  • Ask whether a notice or appeal deadline applies.
  • Build an academic improvement plan with appropriate advising.
  • Prepare a backup funding plan while the outcome is uncertain.

Keep the discussion specific: “My GPA is below the stated renewal threshold. What process applies to this award?” Avoid committing to expenses on the assumption that an exception will be granted.
