Honor Society® Expert FAQ

How do you take effective lecture notes?

Effective lecture notes record the main ideas, relationships, useful examples, and questions you need to revisit. They should help you reconstruct the reasoning rather than serve as an attempted word-for-word transcript.

Capture structure, examples, and questions

Use headings that follow the lecture’s structure and distinguish definitions from examples. In a problem-solving class, note why each step was chosen and where you became uncertain. Mark a gap clearly so you can ask about it instead of silently filling it with a guess.

After class, check confusing points against approved materials and turn key ideas into practice questions. If you use recording or AI transcription, obtain required permission and review errors. Honor Society’s lecture-note workflow can help organize permitted material while keeping your own understanding central.

Your next steps

  • Capture the main claim and the reasoning or example behind it.
  • Mark unclear points for follow-up.
  • Review soon after class and create questions for later practice.
