Honor Society® Expert FAQ
How long do college internships last?
College internships can last a summer, an academic term, or longer. There is no single standard duration, so confirm start and end dates, weekly hours, and any minimum commitment before accepting.
Separate the calendar length from weekly workload
A ten-week full-time placement and a semester-long placement of a few hours each week offer different amounts of experience. Ask what project you will complete and how supervision and feedback fit the schedule. If the internship carries credit, the college may set additional requirements for hours and assignments.
Clarify whether an extension is possible and whether it would change pay, duties, or student eligibility. An invitation to stay is a separate decision: weigh the next stage of learning against your course load and other plans. Do not assume an extension or full-time offer is guaranteed.
Your next steps
- Record dates, weekly hours, and schedule expectations.
- Check academic-credit requirements before starting.
- Discuss project milestones and the process for any extension.
