Honor Society® Expert FAQ
When should you start applying for internships?
Start researching internships well before the term you want to work, because recruiting schedules vary by industry and employer. Some programs hire many months ahead; smaller organizations may post much closer to the start date.
Work backward from employer recruiting schedules
For a summer internship, begin checking target employers during the preceding academic year rather than waiting for spring exams to end. Record opening dates, deadlines, required documents, and whether applications are reviewed as they arrive. A previous year’s timeline is a clue, not confirmation of the current schedule.
Prepare a résumé and work samples before listings open. If a deadline has passed, continue searching for other employers, campus research, or local projects that fit your goals. Do not submit an unfinished application simply to be first; aim for a complete, relevant application within the stated window.
Your next steps
- Check current recruiting dates for your target employers.
- Put preparation milestones before application deadlines.
- Keep a second list of employers with later or rolling openings.
