Honor Society® Expert FAQ

What are graduation honor cords?

Graduation honor cords are narrow decorative strands, often with tasseled ends, worn with academic gowns to represent a recognized achievement, affiliation, or activity. Their meaning depends on the issuing school or organization.

Verify the issuer and ceremony permission

There is no universal cord-color code that applies to every school. A gold cord might represent one distinction at one institution and something different elsewhere. Color alone does not prove a GPA, Latin honor, or class rank.

The issuer determines what a cord represents; the school decides what is permitted at its ceremony. Obtaining a cord from an organization or retailer does not itself confer an academic honor or permission to wear it.

Put the answer into practice

  • Identify the cord’s issuing organization.
  • Confirm the eligibility criteria and your actual recognition.
  • Check the school’s commencement rules before ordering.
  • Ask about pickup, borrowing, or request deadlines.

For a photo caption, name the underlying recognition accurately rather than implying that every cord is an academic award. The graduation cords guide explains common distinctions and questions to ask.
