Honor Society® Expert FAQ
What is graduation regalia?
Graduation regalia is the ceremonial clothing worn at commencement. It commonly includes a gown, cap, and tassel; some degree ceremonies also use a hood. Cords, stoles, or medals may mark additional recognitions or affiliations.
Order for your ceremony and degree
Regalia conventions can vary by institution, degree level, and ceremony. Follow the school’s instructions for gown style, cap, hood, and permitted accessories rather than choosing based on a photograph from another university.
Required academic attire and optional recognition items are different. A cord or stole does not independently prove that a degree or academic honor has been awarded. Similarly, attending commencement does not necessarily mean every degree requirement is finalized.
Put the answer into practice
- Confirm the correct attire and approved ordering route.
- Check whether a rental or borrowing option is available.
- Verify accessory rules and any collection deadlines.
- Try the complete outfit before ceremony day.
If a cost or accessibility issue affects your plans, contact the ceremony office early to ask about available arrangements. Use the cords and recognition guide to understand optional items without confusing them with required attire.
