Honor Society® Expert FAQ

What is an honors diploma?

An honors diploma is a diploma designation indicating completion of additional requirements set by a school, district, state, or academic program. The meaning varies; it is not one nationally standardized credential.

Use the requirements for your graduating class

In high school, an honors designation may involve specified courses, grades, assessments, projects, or other conditions beyond the standard diploma. In other settings, similar wording can describe completion of an institutional honors program. Check the exact credential rather than assuming the name has the same meaning everywhere.

Requirements can change for different entering classes. Taking an honors-level course does not automatically earn an honors diploma, and graduating with Latin honors is a separate designation at many colleges.

Put the answer into practice

  • Ask your counselor for the official requirements for your cohort.
  • Compare your completed and planned courses with the checklist.
  • Identify any assessments or projects that need separate action.
  • Confirm how the designation appears on the final diploma or transcript.

Use the graduation checklist to keep academic requirements separate from ceremony arrangements. Receiving permission to walk at commencement does not necessarily establish that every diploma condition is complete.
