Honor Society® Expert FAQ

What makes a student independent for FAFSA?

FAFSA independence is determined by federal criteria such as age, marriage, graduate study, military status, dependents, and certain care or homelessness circumstances. Use the form’s exact definitions and dates.

What to know before you act

Living away from parents, paying your own expenses, or filing your own tax return does not alone make you independent. Parent refusal to contribute or provide information is also different from unusual circumstances that may justify a dependency override.

If contacting parents is unsafe or impossible because of circumstances such as abandonment or estrangement, contact the financial aid office privately about its documentation process. Answer the application honestly and ask how to proceed; do not invent a status to bypass contributor requirements.

Your next steps

  • Read each dependency question for the correct award year.
  • Keep relevant documentation where available.
  • Ask the school to distinguish an override review from a parent-refusal case.

For the next step, use the fafsa preparation guide. Organize documents, contributor steps, award years, and follow-up tasks.
