Honor Society® Expert FAQ
Can scholarships be used for textbooks?
Scholarship money can pay for textbooks when the award’s terms allow that expense. Some scholarships are restricted to tuition or specific charges; others cover broader educational costs. The provider and college should confirm the rules for your award.
Ask how book costs are paid
A scholarship may be credited to your student account, issued through a bookstore arrangement, or handled by another process. Do not assume you will receive cash before the semester begins. Ask about timing if you need materials before funds are available.
Check whether required supplies, access codes, equipment, or digital subscriptions are included. Keep receipts when reimbursement or documentation is required. An expense being useful for school does not automatically make it permissible under every award.
Put the answer into practice
- Read the eligible-expense wording.
- Confirm how and when funds are disbursed.
- Ask whether reimbursement needs prior approval.
- Keep purchase records and avoid spending before restrictions are clear.
Use a concrete question: “May this award cover the required textbook and course access code, and what documentation is needed?” Treat award-spending rules and any tax questions as separate issues; ask the appropriate office about your circumstances.
