Honor Society® Expert FAQ

Can international students submit FAFSA?

Most international students studying on student visas are not eligible for U.S. federal student aid. Certain eligible noncitizens can qualify, so eligibility depends on immigration status rather than the label “international.”

What to know before you act

Ask the school which documentation and aid application apply to your circumstances. Institutional or private scholarships may use separate forms and different citizenship rules. Do not assume that submitting a FAFSA creates federal eligibility.

Honor Society’s scholarship directory can help you identify additional award leads, but screen each provider’s citizenship, residency, school, and enrollment requirements before applying. For international students, a clear eligibility check saves time and helps separate realistic funding from awards restricted to other applicants.

Your next steps

  • Confirm your federal-aid eligibility category with the school.
  • Ask about institutional aid for international applicants.
  • Verify citizenship and residency terms for every outside scholarship.
