Honor Society® Expert FAQ
Do colleges prefer weighted or unweighted GPA?
Colleges do not share one preference for weighted or unweighted GPA. Admissions offices interpret grades alongside course difficulty, school offerings, and their own evaluation methods.
Show the grading scale and the courses behind it
A weighted GPA adds value for designated advanced courses; an unweighted GPA does not make that adjustment. Because schools weight courses differently, identical numbers can represent different records. Some colleges recalculate grades using a common method, while others rely on transcript context.
Report the GPA and scale requested by each application. Do not substitute a self-calculated figure unless the college asks you to calculate it. When choosing future courses, consider preparation, interest, and a sustainable workload rather than chasing a higher weighted number at the expense of learning.
Your next steps
- Identify which GPA appears on your official transcript.
- Follow each college’s reporting instructions.
- Evaluate rigor and performance together when planning courses.
