Honor Society® Expert FAQ
Do AP exam scores matter for college admissions?
AP exam scores can matter, but their role differs by college. A college may consider reported scores in admissions and use its own separate policies to award credit or determine course placement.
Separate admission review from credit decisions
AP course grades show your performance across a class; an AP exam score reflects performance on that exam. Neither substitutes automatically for the other. Check whether the application asks for all scores, selected scores, or an official report, and follow the current rules for your entry year.
Do not assume AP scores satisfy an SAT or ACT requirement. Testing policies change, and a school that previously accepted different exams may now require a specific test. After admission, review the department’s credit policy before assuming a score will satisfy a degree requirement or shorten your studies.
Your next steps
- Check admissions reporting rules for your application cycle.
- Check credit and placement policies separately.
- Report scores accurately and verify any required official submission.
