Honor Society® Expert FAQ

Should you submit SAT scores to test-optional colleges?

Submit an SAT score to a test-optional college when you reasonably believe it adds useful evidence of academic readiness, after reviewing the college’s current guidance and your overall application.

Evaluate the score in the context of the whole file

Compare the score with published ranges carefully: those figures may describe only students who submitted scores and may not represent every admitted student. Consider relevant section scores, coursework, school context, and any scholarship or program requirements. There is no universal percentile rule that guarantees the right choice.

Ask a counselor for context when available, and check whether the college lets you change your testing choice after submission. A strong score can add information, but it does not guarantee admission; choosing not to submit should still leave a complete application under the institution’s rules.

Your next steps

  • Confirm that submission is genuinely optional for your situation.
  • Read the source and population behind published score ranges.
  • Make a school-specific decision and follow its reporting instructions.
