Honor Society® Expert FAQ
How do you ask for a referral to an internship?
Ask for an internship referral by naming a specific opening, explaining your relevant experience, and giving the person an easy way to decline. A referral is a recommendation or routing step, not a promise of an interview or job.
Give the contact enough context to decide honestly
If you do not know the person well, begin with a focused question about the team or role rather than immediately requesting an endorsement. Someone should not be expected to vouch for work they have never seen. Alumni connections can open a conversation, but shared affiliation alone does not establish professional familiarity.
When a referral is appropriate, send the verified posting, a concise résumé, and two or three relevant facts. Ask whether the employer requires a referral before you apply. Thank the person whether or not they can help, and keep responsibility for the application with you.
Your next steps
- Identify the exact role and why you meet its requirements.
- Ask whether the contact feels comfortable referring you.
- Follow the employer’s process and send a brief thank-you.
