Honor Society® Expert FAQ
Can internships count for college credit?
An internship can count for college credit when your institution approves it under its academic policies. Employer willingness alone does not award credit; you may need a course registration, faculty supervisor, learning agreement, and assessed work.
Obtain academic approval before counting on credit
Ask your department or internship office about deadlines, required hours, assignments, grading, and whether credit applies to your major or only as an elective. Some programs require approval before the placement begins and may charge tuition or fees. Get the answer before assuming the internship will advance your degree.
Paid internships can sometimes earn credit, depending on college policy. Conversely, credit does not automatically make an unpaid placement lawful. Keep academic approval and compensation compliance as separate questions, and save documentation of the agreed responsibilities and completed work.
Your next steps
- Confirm approval requirements before starting the internship.
- Check tuition, degree applicability, hours, and assessment.
- Keep the learning agreement and completion records.
