Honor Society® Expert FAQ
How do students avoid overreliance on AI?
Avoid overreliance on AI by attempting tasks first, limiting the help you request, and testing what you can do afterward without the assistant. Independent performance is a better learning check than the quality of the generated response.
Keep a deliberate stage where you work without assistance
Use hints before full explanations and explain why a suggested step makes sense. If you immediately ask for an answer whenever you feel uncertain, reduce the task to one manageable part and attempt it yourself. Keep some practice sessions entirely unaided, especially when the assessment will be unaided.
Watch for a gap between recognition and understanding: a solution can look familiar while you remain unable to reproduce the reasoning. If that happens, return to course examples or a tutor. Honor Society’s study-practice guidance can help structure a cycle of attempt, feedback, and independent retry.
Your next steps
- Make a genuine attempt before seeking help.
- Request the smallest useful hint and check it.
- Complete a new example without AI and review the gaps.
