Honor Society® Expert FAQ
How can students use AI to brainstorm research topics?
AI can help brainstorm research topics by suggesting angles, comparisons, and possible questions. Treat those suggestions as starting points that need preliminary research, not as evidence that a topic is original or feasible.
Use suggestions to generate questions, then investigate them
Provide the assignment’s scope and your interests without confidential material. Ask for several questions and the evidence each would require. Then search library databases or approved sources to see what work exists and whether the proposed question can be answered within the time and methods available.
Reject fabricated citations and unsupported claims of a research gap. Narrow the question using what you actually find. If the project involves people or sensitive data, consult the instructor about required approvals before collecting information. Keep responsibility for the final question and argument with you.
Your next steps
- Give the assignment scope and a broad area of interest.
- Test suggested questions through credible preliminary research.
- Choose a feasible question and document any required AI disclosure.
