4 Tips to Reinvent Your Career

Introduction
    This article is highlighting the experiences of the famously successful stand-up comedian and Actor Steve Harvey.  Like many famous actors and musicians, he has gone through some very difficult times during his career.  In order to get through those times, he had to be very creative and strong willed while reinventing his career.  Harvey says that in order to reinvent your career you will have to do something similar."  He also said that , "The hardest decision he ever made was giving up his beloved stand-up to reach a bigger audience."
Giving Up Things You Love
    After quitting stand-up at age 55, Harvey started his hit daytime show (The Steve Harvey Show) as well as becoming the new host of "Family Feud".  He also sat down to Write a bestseller, "Act Like a Success, Think Like a Success: Discovering Your Gift and the Way to Life's Riches."  Harvey commented, "I knew to get to the next level I had to be willing to give up something."  "No matter how talented you are, we're hardwired to for midlife reinvention." His continued advice: "I don't care what you do.  You've got to give up something to get to the next level."
Tips 1 and 2
    Don't be afraid of changing, it's the only way to push yourself forward.  It's necessary if you don't want to become outdated.  We're given multiple gifts as we are growing up.  It's always a good idea to look into other fields so that you can use all of your gifts in your lifetime.  "Diversifying your gifts present you with the opportunity to reach people whom you wouldn't have been able to connect with previously", says Harvey.
Tip 3
    You always hear the phrase, "It's good to network" when job searching.  However, you need to always be networking, not only when you are searching for jobs.  Harvey says, "You're more likely to benefit from your network if you view these connections as opportunities for continuing a series of give-and-take experiences."  "When you interact with people only when you need something, they can see your intentions coming a mile away."  "It's a lot easier to ask people for help when you're dealing with people who you have created a give-and-take relationship with."
Tip 4
    As I mentioned in the Introduction, Harvey faced many obstacles on his way to becoming a household name.  This included living out of his car during one especially low point.  However, he never let these experiences get him down.  He looked at them as test in his life that everyone has to go through at some point.  "Everybody has a bunch of tests-you have to pass them, you have to graduate," he says.  "Never give up.  My persistence during the darkest times allowed me to see what the outcome can be.  People need to understand that no matter how bad it gets, it can turn around.
