Politically Savvy

I am one of those weird kids in college….yeah, I’m a political science major.  Whenever I tell people my major, I get weird looks.  Some people even ask, “WHY”?!?!  I even carry a pocket Constitution with me wherever I go.  I keep one in my purse, my backpack, and my car.  Yeah, I know, I’m weird, but that’s okay with me!  I have always been interested in politics and how our government is run.  It is this love of politics that inspired me to write an article on why I believe everyone should take at least one political science class in college.

One reason to take a political science class is because you will be informed.  It is hard to vote or be involved in your community if you are not informed on different issues that will make an impact on your community.  Well, let me clarify.  You can still vote, but you might not make the right decision for your community.  Political science classes allow you to explore different areas of the government, some that may interest you and others that are not so interesting.

I advise you, please take the following with a grain of salt.  One thing that everyone does is complain about our government.  No matter what political party you affiliate with and no matter what party is in office, you will have something to complain about.  Again, please take what I’m about to say with a grain of salt, okay?  I believe that a lot of people complain about things that happen in the government, but they don’t really have a lot of knowledge about the subject they are complaining about.  If you take a political science, you will know the ins and outs of the government and you can maybe set someone straight on their opinion.  You’ll learn about what rights you have as an American citizen.

If you do not particularly care for politics, this is even more of a reason to take a political science class.  I encourage you to get out of your comfort zone!  You’re in college to push limits, to challenge yourself, and to discover who you really are.  Maybe you will be the next president or the next diplomat?  If you don’t end up being in the political field, you still need to know the law for no matter what you end up doing.  You don’t want to go to jail for breaking a law that you did not know about!  You will never know unless you try!

I hope this article has inspired you to take at least one political science class.  I know that some colleges require general education classes, and political science may be one of the options.  I seriously encourage you to take a political science course.  It will make you think, it will challenge your beliefs at time, and may even make you change your beliefs at times.  Let me know what political science classes you have taken and if you enjoyed them or not.
