Who I am
Apr 02,2015
To be able to write about my aspirations, goals, hobbies and interests, I must first talk about the most important and remarkable experience of my life.
Almost three years ago I had the privilege of receiving a scholarship awarded by the international organization United World College, represented in Venezuela by Avemundo. Said process involved several stages, tests of general knowledge, coexistence, interviews and the development of a social project, which I was to perform in my college and its main objective was to sensitize people about tolerance and respect in between teachers, students and collaborators. The main concern of my project was to emphasize the value of "tolerance" over the behavior of many young people and children, who assault and show contempt to their teachers and even to students with lower grades. After the completion of each of the demanding stages, I came first place among more than 170 students from all over Venezuela, winning a scholarship for my International Baccalaureate studies at the United World College Red Cross Nordic (UWCRCN) in Norway. During my two years studying at this wonderful small school, my life goals and aspirations have changed completely. Since UWCRCN not only focuses on providing education, but also creates new leaders and bridges boundaries between nations in order to create future citizens to work for peace, in this small school in a small town in Song of Fjordane is formed by 200 students from more than 70 countries around the world, I met people from countries of which I was unaware of its existence. This great cultural exchange helped me to understand different political points of view, such as on the Gaza conflict – of which I got to know better through the help of two of my friends, one from Palestine and one from Israel. Despite their differences, they were living in harmony at our small college, I also learned a lot about different world religions, such as Hinduism and Islam, by my roommate and friend from Nepal and Somalia. I learned how to dance African and Asian dances and I discovered different flavors of the food from around the world. It was an invaluable opportunity for me to travel to Poland with a group of peers and to spend some time with handicapped children of the Laski institution, mostly of whom suffering from blindness. We lived together for a few days and it left me a great lesson: in spite of the physical difficulties, the children had such a strong spirit, a persevering nature and were very happy. I learned that the greatest wealth does not lay in material things, but is within you and those around me and it is priceless.
For two years, my life was concentrated around this small village of Flekke in Norway. This experience led me to discover that I lived in a bubble before going to UWCRCN; I was not aware of all the problems around the world, of all the beauty and miracles that exist in. I also got deeper and aware of what was happening in my own country, it is inevitable to compare when you look from outside. As a society, we have a lot to learn and develop and this discovery changed my life, especially my goals. I began to appreciate the great power that lays within communication and I began to understand that many of our problems are caused by the lack of information. Our social media unfortunately are also victims of consumerism, these no longer focus their main attention to educate, inform, investigate and transmit everything that happens in the different corners of the planet, instead, are focused on bringing entertainment and programs that sells, such as: comedy shows, series, the sex industry, etc. The journalism and investigative information has been passed to a second place.
For all these reasons I have decided to study Broadcast Journalism, as my main goal is to be able to voice the stories of different cultures around the world. I want to inform and show the reality in many countries, especially Venezuela. I am interested in being a medium of information and expression for many people, who have stories to tell and alternative for all those who have ideas, answers, solutions, questions or needs. I moreover want to dedicate my work as a journalist to the conservation of the environment. From my childhood years onwards I have been a true environmentalist and protector of animals. I think that our environment and nature are God’s blessings and to protect them is our duty. Therefore, one of my life goals is to create an animal rescue foundation.
My hobbies are related to my ambitions: I love writing and researching on my work at the TV show ‘OU Nightly’, where I am the presenter of the Spanish news. I am very interested in art, I love drawing and playing guitar. I am finally enjoying an active and healthy life, I like to run and play volleyball.
I hope through this essay I could give you an idea of who I am as a person. I am grateful for the opportunity to express myself and share with you my past - but also my dreams and ambitions, which I think helped me to some of my best experiences in life and made me the person I am today.
