Honor Society® Expert FAQ

Can you retake a class to improve GPA?

You may be able to improve GPA by retaking a class, but colleges differ in whether they replace a grade, count both attempts, or apply limits. Confirm the rule before assuming a repeat will erase the first result.

Confirm how the repeat will be counted before enrolling

Check eligible grades, attempt limits, deadlines, and whether the repeat must occur at the same institution. A department may require a particular grade for progression even when the course already earned credit. Honors calculations or outside applications may use a different treatment from the institutional GPA.

Compare the repeat with other priorities, including prerequisites, cost, and graduation timing. Honor Society’s repeated-course guide helps identify the questions to ask. A repeat is most useful when you also change the conditions that contributed to the original difficulty.

Your next steps

  • Get the applicable repeat rule and any required approval.
  • Estimate the GPA effect using the correct treatment.
  • Plan time, tutoring, and prerequisites for the next attempt.
