Honor Society® Expert FAQ
How does pass-fail grading affect GPA?
Pass/fail grading often treats a passing result differently from a letter grade in GPA calculations, but policies vary. A failing result may still affect GPA, and the course may not satisfy every degree requirement.
Separate GPA treatment from degree applicability
Before changing grading options, check the deadline, the meaning of each grade symbol, and whether the course is required for your major or a future program. A course can count toward total credits yet fail to satisfy a prerequisite that requires a specified letter grade.
Also check scholarships, honors, and financial-aid progress rules. Honor Society’s pass/fail guide explains why those requirements should be reviewed separately. Do not choose pass/fail based only on a GPA calculator that excludes every non-letter grade without checking your institution’s policy.
Your next steps
- Confirm the grading-option deadline and GPA treatment.
- Check major, prerequisite, and future-program requirements.
- Ask about honors and aid effects before changing the option.
