Honor Society® Expert FAQ
How do you calculate college GPA?
Calculate college GPA by multiplying each course’s grade-point value by its GPA-bearing credits, adding those quality points, and dividing by total GPA-bearing credits. Use your institution’s grade scale and inclusion rules.
Divide total quality points by GPA-bearing credits
Fictional example: an A worth 4.0 in a three-credit course produces 12 quality points. A B worth 3.0 in a four-credit course produces 12. Together, 24 quality points divided by seven credits gives about 3.43. Averaging 4.0 and 3.0 directly would incorrectly ignore the different credit weights.
Pass/fail courses, withdrawals, repeated classes, transfer credit, and incomplete grades can be treated differently. Use the registrar’s rules and transcript figures for an official calculation. Honor Society’s target-GPA guide can help with planning, but an estimate does not replace your institution’s recorded GPA.
Your next steps
- Collect each course’s grade-point value and GPA-bearing credits.
- Add quality points and divide by included credits.
- Confirm special grading rules and the official rounding method.
