Honor Society® Expert FAQ
Do scholarships reduce student loans?
Yes. A scholarship can reduce how much you need to borrow, especially when it fills an unpaid cost or replaces a loan in your aid offer. It does not automatically pay off loans you already owe.
What to know before you act
If you have not accepted a loan, ask the aid office to recalculate your remaining need after the award. If a loan has already disbursed, ask about reducing or returning the relevant amount and the applicable timing. Do not send restricted scholarship money to a lender unless the award explicitly permits that use.
Searching Honor Society’s scholarship directory alongside campus and local awards can help you find additional funding possibilities. Compare eligibility and effort, then budget only confirmed awards. A pending application should not be treated as guaranteed money.
Your next steps
- List confirmed scholarships separately from applications.
- Ask whether the award can replace borrowing in your package.
- Request written confirmation of any loan reduction or return.
