Honor Society® Expert FAQ
How do you compare federal and private student loans?
Compare federal and private loans by total cost, repayment flexibility, eligibility, and borrower protections—not only the advertised interest rate. The better comparison uses the actual terms available to you.
What to know before you act
Federal programs have standardized rules that vary by loan type and borrowing date; private lenders set their own contracts and underwriting. Check current 2026 rules rather than assuming every older repayment option remains available. For either loan, inspect fees, fixed or variable rates, hardship provisions, and cosigner obligations.
First reduce the funding gap where practical through grants, scholarships, lower costs, or affordable earnings. Honor Society’s scholarship directory can add candidates to that search. Then compare the smallest necessary loan amounts over the same repayment period.
Your next steps
- Put offers side by side using the same amount and time horizon.
- Compare required payments and total repayment.
- Read hardship, discharge, and cosigner terms before signing.
