Honor Society® Expert FAQ
How do private student loans work?
Private student loans come from private lenders and use their own underwriting and repayment terms. Approval, pricing, and whether a cosigner is needed can depend on credit and other financial information.
What to know before you act
Compare fixed and variable rates, fees, in-school payment requirements, hardship options, and cosigner-release conditions. A low advertised rate may not be the rate offered to you. Private loans do not automatically provide federal repayment or forgiveness protections.
Before applying, calculate the remaining education gap after confirmed aid and affordable contributions. Review federal options and scholarship possibilities first. Honor Society’s directory can help identify additional awards, but do not assume unawarded scholarships will cover a future loan payment.
Your next steps
- Compare actual disclosures from multiple lenders.
- Estimate total repayment under realistic rate scenarios.
- Have every borrower and cosigner understand their obligations.
For the next step, use the compare financial aid offers. Use a worked example and worksheet to compare net price, loans, and renewal conditions.
