Honor Society® Expert FAQ
When do student loans start accruing interest?
Interest timing depends on the loan. Direct Unsubsidized Loans generally accrue interest from disbursement, while eligible Direct Subsidized Loans receive government-paid interest during specified periods.
What to know before you act
Private loan rules depend on the contract, and postponing payments does not necessarily postpone interest. A grace period can delay the first required payment while interest continues to accumulate. Whether unpaid interest is added to principal also depends on the loan’s rules.
Ask for a borrowing illustration showing the starting balance, rate, in-school interest, and repayment schedule. If you choose to make voluntary payments, confirm how they will be applied. Reducing the amount borrowed can lower interest exposure before repayment begins.
