Honor Society® Expert FAQ

How do scholarships affect financial aid?

A scholarship can reduce your remaining college costs, but your school may also adjust other aid after adding it to your package. The result depends on the award, aid program, and college’s packaging policy.

What to know before you act

Ask whether an outside award first replaces unmet need, loans, work-study, or institutional grants. Do not assume every scholarship reduces your bill by its full face value. Federal need and cost-of-attendance limits can require changes. Beginning with the 2026–27 award year, nonfederal grants and scholarships that equal or exceed cost of attendance can also eliminate Pell Grant eligibility.

Honor Society’s scholarship listings offer another way to identify awards beyond your college. Their practical value is expanding your funding search; the school still determines how a particular award fits your aid package.

Your next steps

  • Report each award to your financial aid office.
  • Request a revised breakdown showing grants, loans, and remaining costs.
  • Compare your net cost before and after the adjustment.
