Honor Society® Expert FAQ
How do you fact-check AI-generated answers?
Fact-check an AI answer by separating its claims and verifying important ones against original or authoritative sources. Asking the same chatbot whether it is correct is not independent confirmation.
Check the evidence outside the conversation
For a statistic, check the original publication, date, population, and definition. For a quotation, locate the exact passage. For a calculation, reproduce the steps with known inputs. A real source can still be cited for a claim it does not support, so inspect the relevant content rather than only opening the link.
Prioritize claims that affect a deadline, application, academic decision, or payment. If evidence is missing or contradictory, label the uncertainty and ask the responsible office or qualified person. Keep a short record of the source you used and when you checked it.
Your next steps
- Break the answer into factual claims and calculations.
- Verify consequential claims in original sources.
- Correct unsupported statements or mark them unresolved.
