Honor Society® Expert FAQ
How many extracurriculars should you list on applications?
List the activities that best represent your meaningful commitments, up to the application’s limit. You do not need to fill every available slot, and an empty slot is better than an inflated or repetitive entry.
Use available space only when it adds information
Common App allows up to ten activities in its first-year Activities and Experiences section, but other applications may differ. Check the current form rather than treating ten as a goal for your high school experience. Work and family commitments can be important entries when they fit the instructions.
Rank activities by importance to you and the evidence they provide. Avoid splitting one role into several entries just to increase the count. If an experience needs context, use the relevant field concisely instead of repeating the same explanation throughout the application.
Your next steps
- Confirm the current limit and field instructions.
- Combine overlapping descriptions of the same commitment.
- Order entries so your strongest sustained work is easy to find.
