Honor Society® Expert FAQ

What is cost of attendance?

Cost of attendance is a school-defined education budget used in financial-aid calculations. It includes tuition and fees plus applicable allowances for expenses such as housing, food, books, and transportation.

What to know before you act

It is not necessarily the amount the school will bill you or the amount of aid you will receive. Your personal spending may differ from standard allowances, and the budget can vary with enrollment, program, and living arrangement.

If you have documented allowable expenses not adequately reflected in the budget, ask about a cost-of-attendance review. An increase may permit consideration of additional aid, but it does not guarantee grant funding. Compare the resulting budget with actual expenses before borrowing to the limit.

Your next steps

  • Check the attendance period and housing assumptions.
  • Separate school-billed costs from expenses paid elsewhere.
  • Ask which documented expenses can be reviewed.

For the next step, use the compare financial aid offers. Use a worked example and worksheet to compare net price, loans, and renewal conditions.
