Honor Society® Expert FAQ

Does financial aid cover textbooks?

Financial aid may cover required textbooks and course materials through the school’s education budget, subject to the rules of each award. The amount offered may not match every purchase you make.

What to know before you act

Ask whether the school provides a bookstore charge arrangement or another way for eligible students to obtain required materials before a refund arrives. Compare that option with rental, used, digital, or library access where the course permits it. Required access codes may make a used book incomplete.

Keep receipts and distinguish required materials from optional purchases. If a required item costs substantially more than the allowance, ask whether a documented budget adjustment is possible. That review does not automatically create additional grant funding.

Your next steps

  • Get the correct edition and required-materials list.
  • Compare total prices including access codes and fees.
  • Confirm when aid-funded purchasing or refunds become available.

For the next step, use the compare financial aid offers. Use a worked example and worksheet to compare net price, loans, and renewal conditions.
