Honor Society® Expert FAQ
What is the difference between subsidized and unsubsidized loans?
The main difference is who pays interest during certain periods. With eligible Direct Subsidized Loans, the government covers interest during specified periods; Direct Unsubsidized Loans accrue interest from disbursement.
What to know before you act
Subsidized loans are for eligible undergraduate students with financial need. Unsubsidized loans can serve eligible undergraduate and graduate borrowers without the same need requirement. Both must be repaid, and annual and aggregate limits apply.
Compare the loan type, interest rate, fees, and timing of repayment on your actual offer. If you borrow, request only what you need after grants, scholarships, and other available funds. An offered maximum is not a recommendation to borrow that amount.
Your next steps
- Identify the exact loan type on the aid offer.
- Estimate interest and total repayment, not just the first payment.
- Ask how enrollment changes affect subsidy and repayment.
