Honor Society® Expert FAQ
What does deferred admission mean?
“Deferred” can mean an early application will be reconsidered in the regular round, or that an admitted student has permission to postpone enrollment. Read the notice to identify which situation applies.
Identify which meaning the college is using
An application deferral is not an acceptance or rejection. Follow instructions for midyear grades and permitted updates, and continue other applications. Send a letter of continued interest only if the college accepts one; repeated unrequested materials are not a substitute for useful information.
An enrollment deferral concerns an offer already made. Ask about the approved start term, coursework restrictions, deposits, and whether scholarships or aid will carry forward. Admission deferral approval does not automatically preserve every funding commitment. Keep written confirmation of the conditions.
Your next steps
- Identify whether the notice concerns review or enrollment.
- Follow the stated update or deferral process.
- Keep alternative plans and verify any effect on scholarships.
